Give feedback: New public trash cans in North Portland
Via the Public Trash Can Program:
https://www.portland.gov/public-trash-cans/north-portland-public-trash-cans
In Spring 2022, the City will be adding new public trash cans throughout North Portland.
These 100 new cans will increase the total number of City-provided and serviced trash cans in North Portland to 215.
Live or work in North Portland? We want to hear from you!
We are actively seeking feedback from people who live or work in North Portland on where the new cans should (or shouldn’t) be located. Please fill out this short survey or send comments to Quintin Bauer by February 1, 2022.
If you would like to receive email updates on when and where the cans will be installed, contact Quintin Bauer.
Give feedback on where to add new cans
Area where new trash cans will be added
The new cans will be added in the area from the Willamette River on the West, city limits on the North, Burnside Street on the South, and Williams Avenue on the East, as well as in the Lloyd District from the Willamette River on the West, Broadway on the North, Burnside on the South, and NE 15th Avenue on the East.
Cans can be placed on public sidewalks, including near businesses, schools, and intersections. (The cans cannot be placed in parking lots or other private property.)
About the trash cans
The 65-gallon trash cans are 4.5-feet tall and take up a 3x3-foot space on the ground. In some cases, such as narrow sidewalks, a smaller 35-gallon can may be used.
The cans have a side attachment for deposit beverage bottles, which can be easily collected by community members. The art on the outside of the cans will be designed by local artists, chosen in partnership with local arts groups.
The trash cans will be emptied twice a week by a women or minority-owned trash hauler (currently being selected).

Update: December 20th 2021
Arbor Lodge Shelter is doing well. Many neighbors have stepped up to bring food. Thank you!
They do need things from this list to help those living there:
*. books to read
*. board games
*. playing cards
*. art supplies
*. non sugar snacks like nuts, chips
*. warm hats and socks
You can deliver these items anytime/day between 8am and 6pm. Just pull into the parking lot, park and walk to the front door - near the intersection. Someone will be at that door and welcome you and give you thanks for your donation. The Shelter is at the old Rite Aid building, on the SE corner of Lombard and Denver.
Thank you for considering our new neighbors.

Update: December 19th 2021
This neighborhood rocks!
Working together, ALNA and the Chief Joseph School PTO recruited just over $6,000 in cash donations this month for the Chief Joseph School Backpack program. That is just amazing!
Thank you all.
Shelf stable food donations were up also. The BIG hearts in Arbor Lodge come out at the right time.

Serves: About 26 3-inch completed cookies
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup whole almonds or hazelnuts (blanched or unblanched)
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
¾ cup sugar, divided
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large egg yolks
Zest of one small lemon
½ cup raspberry jam
½ cup powdered sugar
Instructions
To toast the almonds: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spread the nuts out on a cookie sheet, place them on the middle rack and toast for about 8-10 minutes, or until lightly browned and fragrant. Let the nuts cool completely and grind them in a food processor along with ¼ cup of the sugar until finely ground.
In a separate bowl, sift the flour, salt, and cinnamon. Stir in the ground almonds.
In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter until pale in color, add the sugar and beat until fluffy, and then add and beat the egg yolks, vanilla extract and lemon zest. Gradually beat the flour/nut mixture into the butter mixture. Divide the dough into quarters, wrap each piece with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour or up to 2 days.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
Remove one piece of dough from the refrigerator at a time. Place the dough between two sheets of wax paper and roll it out to ¼ inch thickness. Use 3-inch cookie cutters (round, stars, heart-shaped are the most traditional) to cut out the cookies and place them on a lined or non-stick cookie sheet. Cut out a top for each cookie, using a smaller cookie cutter to cut out the center so the raspberry preserves will be exposed. Repeat with the remaining pieces of dough.
Gather up any scraps of dough, let them chill a few minutes, and cut out the remaining cookies. Note: It's important that the cookies remain firm so that they retain their shape. If the dough becomes soft, place the cookie sheet in the fridge for a few minutes to chill before baking.
In an oven preheated to 350 degrees F, bake the cookies for about12 minutes or until just starting to turn golden around the edges. Let the cookies cool for a few minutes until transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Once cooled, spread the bottom half of each cookie with some raspberry preserves, leaving a thin border around each cookie. Place the top of each cookie on its corresponding bottom half. Use a spoon or piping bag to fill the cut out center with a little more of the preserves.
Store in an airtight container for up to several days.
