2022 Bill Naito Community Trees Award | The individual winner is Ginger Edwards
The Bill Naito Community Trees Award recognizes our neighbors who have worked tirelessly to care for, protect, and advocate for our community’s trees.
This year, the individual winner is Ginger Edwards. From the Arbor Lodge Tree Teams nomination: “Ginger Edwards is our community’s Lorax. Not only does she speak for trees, she speaks for parks and native species and pollinators and as a former police officer and social worker, the entire human-human and human-Other community that enfolds us all. The Arbor Lodge Tree Team works to plant, preserve, and promote trees in our neighborhood and beyond. Mainly, though, we are just people who like trees. Ginger has guided, motivated, and ever-so-gently cajoled us into a group of volunteer “tree geeks” - increasingly cohesive, educated, and focused on the two branches of our tree mission: policy/advocacy/education and putting trees in the ground.
“The Lorax” story encourages personal care and involvement in making a situation better. Seuss writes: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Ginger is our Lorax.””

Updates on the Arbor Lodge Shelter
Here is an update from the Joint Office of Homeless Services:
The Arbor Lodge Shelter is ready for its long-planned upgrade!
The shelter will be converted into a long-term, purpose-built shelter. The long-term shelter will prioritize serving people referred from the surrounding community and North Portland.
Current Arbor Lodge Shelter guests will be moved — either into permanent housing or to other shelter sites. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-November.
The construction is expected to be completed in mid-2023, when a grand reopening event will be scheduled. The existing outdoor sleeping units will be stored and saved for future use. Shower and restroom trailers will also be removed from the site during construction.
The Joint Office has worked with a focus group of neighbors and community members to review and refine design renovation plans for the high-quality, professionally designed long-term shelter.
The new, upgraded shelter will include better fencing, interior design improvements and community-led artwork created by local artists. On Aug. 11, 2022, RACC (the Regional Arts and Culture Council) hosted its first in a series of artist selection panel meetings for community-facing public art at the Arbor Lodge Shelter. The long-term shelter — which the Joint Office is supporting with funds from Multnomah County, the State of Oregon and the Metro Supportive Housing Services Measure — will offer health and housing services. It will be available through reservations only, and open all day, meaning there won’t be lines to get in or large groups of people leaving. Guests will be able keep their beds as long as needed, while they work with case managers to plan their next steps toward permanent housing. It will offer laundry access, storage, restrooms, a kitchen, offices, parking, and indoor and outdoor common spaces.
If you have questions about the construction and the long-term plan for the site, contact the Joint Office.
Thank you for the community support and the work you are all doing in the neighborhood to support the shelter and to help those experiencing homelessness in our city.
